On August 28, 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. That day in August there were 2000, 000 civil rights supporters there to listen to Dr. King's words that called for racial equity and an end to discrimmination. The speech only lasted 17 minutes, but helped to change the course of history.
Dr. King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. Dr. King liked sports. He played baseball, basketball and wrestling, but he especially liked reading. He liked reading about famous people in black history. He found out what it took for them to overcome difficulties and become successful. He liked to learn new words and use them. Dr. King went to college and received his Ph.D.. He married Coretta Scott in June 1953 and they had four children. Dr. King devoted his life to the crusade to secure equal rights for all using nonviolence. On December 10, 1964, when he was 35, Dr. King was the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to abolish inequalities. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is federal holiday in the United States. The holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday on January 15th. This year it will be observed on Monday, January 17th. In honor of Dr. Martin King, Jr. your assignment will be to write your own "I Have a Dream" Speech.

Please read the following directions carefully before completing this assignment.

1. First please watch this video created by students at the Harry McKillop Elementary School about Dr. King's speech. Please be sure to read the video infomration on the right side of the page.
2. Please take time to read or listen the words of Dr. King's speech. Pay special attention to the end of his speech when he lists his "I have a dream" hopes.
3. Grab a piece of paper and pencil and begin to write your draft "I Have a Dream" Speech. Use Dr. King's speech as your model. Take time to think of positive changes you would like to see happen in your lifetime. Issues that you see in your school, town, country, and world. What things would you most like to see changed? You must write a minimum or FIVE things you want to see changed and please begin your sentences with the words of Dr. King "I have a dream that one day.....
4. Please revise your draft and make sure you have checked your grammar, spelling, puncuation, etc.
5. When you have your final draft please head over to your GROUP PAGE and post your "I Have a Dream" Speech. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check for spelling, grammar, puncuation, etc. BEFORE posting your response.

I have a dream that one day the world will be free from war and people will live in harmony.
I have a dream that one day pollution around the world is no longer in existence.
I have a dream that one day all students will enter school without the fear of being bullied.
I have a dream that one day all students will have equal access to technology both at home and at school
I have a dream that one day no person in the world will be hungry; that food and clean water is available to everyone no matter where they live.
